What is NLP?Neuro-Linguistic Programming is the science of excellence and the art of change. NLP is the study of how our mind and language affect our behaviour. NLP is a very pragmatic “how to” technology that teaches us how to use our brain, language and physiology systematically to produce the desired results.
NLP is essentially a model of excellence and achievement, simply what works. It is a set of guiding principles, attitudes, knowledge, skills and techniques. NLP is a discovery about how people think, communicate, feel, and act. It is a field that is constantly evolving, innovating, and developing. It offers tools for creating profound personal change and offers countless professional applications. The processes are elegant, powerful, and always practical. NLP evolved in the early seventies by the work of 2 people: John Grinder, then as Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and Richard Bandler, a student of psychology at the University. NLP is based on careful observations of highly effectively people. Both founders studied the three top psychotherapists of this century in great depth. They are: Milton Erickson, known as the Father of Modern Hypnotherapy, Virginia Satir, known as the Mother of Family System Therapy, and Fritz Perls, known as the Father of Gestalt Therapy. John and Richard identified a great many of the underlying patterns of behaviour and communication that made these great therapists so effective in assisting people in changing their lives for the better. They used what they found to create a set of models of human skills and capabilities that is known to us as “Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Essentially, NLP models are based on the modelling of human excellence; another person’s behaviour can be duplicated by studying what that person does inside his mind to produce results. NLP is a field that is continually innovating and developing until today. Why Learn NLP?One of the very important aspects of NLP is to build, develop, and maintain rapport with others. Successful chairmen, presidents, managers, and executives generate rapport. However, most practice it intuitively or involuntarily. Only a scarce few understand what it is and still fewer, how to create it. In NLP, it shows us how these rapport skills can be learned and effectively applied to business. In business, as in life, where there is no rapport there is no sale. Any change in an organisation must begin at the individual level. NLP is a profound tool for personal development. All executives and managers need to be able to take charge of themselves first, so they can utilise the wealth of information that must be continually processed. These strategies can then be passed onto employees, so that they too can experience a sense of belonging and commitment to the work they do. NLP offers some of the most powerful communication skills available. Much of our success in life depends on our ability to communicate effectively and as you can observe the highly successful professionals they are almost certainly a great communicator. The wealth of communication skills that NLP offers will show you how to be more congruent in your communications and thus become an effective communicator. Through using NLP techniques, your personal happiness and professional success will be much more consistent and predictable.
